Welcome to the world of Pokmon, one filled with wild Pokmon and the people who attempt to tame them. You are Ash Ketchum, a boy on a quest to become the best Pokmon trainer in the world. Professor Oak, the leading authority on Pokmon, has given you your choice of three tame Pokmon in exchange for your helping him catalog and document every Pokmon in the world.

But to catalog a Pokmon, you have to capture it by first beating it up with one of your trained Pokmon, and then hitting it with an empty Pok Ball. As your tame Pokmon gain experience in battle, their abilities improve and they earn access to new attacks. Sometimes they even evolve into more advanced Pokmon.

Aside from capturing wild Pokmon and evolving your own, you can catalog new Pokmon by trading with another Pokmon player using either a link cable or the Game Boy Color's infrared system. Pokmon gained through trades learn and evolve faster, and trading is the only way to capture all 151 Pokmon, since each Pokmon game (Pokmon Red, Pokmon Blue, andPokmon Yellow) has certain Pokmon missing. Of course, as a Pokmon trainer, you've "gotta catch 'em all!"--150 to be exact. Max Payne's wife and baby daughter were slain by junkies hopped up on a dangerous new synthetic drug. For three years, Max has worked undercover to find the source of these drugs, and, just when he's almost got it figured out, somebody ices his superior and pins the murder on him. Now it's payback time as Max faces off against the Mob, the police, and much, much worse. Max Payne has jumped from the computer screen to the PlayStation2 and there's going to be hell to pay.

Max Payne uses extremely realistic graphics to showcase a gritty film-noir-inspired New York City. Payne stalks subways, tenements, nightclubs, and even government installations as he takes his vengeance out on a horde of gun-toting bad guys. Taking a page from the visual style of famed director John Woo, as well as The Matrix, Max Payne lets the player launch into a slow-motion mode generally known as "bullet time," which makes dodging enemy fire and dishing out your own return fire a breeze, all while leaping side to side. While this looks extremely cool to do, it also evens the odds and can only be used for limited amounts of time, making it a strategic as well as aesthetic option.

And speaking of aesthetics, the game is packed with exciting moments, weapons, and locations, even if the enemies get a little redundant after a while. The level design ranges from inspired (a multilevel parking garage) to humdrum (a warehouse) and several levels actually take place in the twisted wonderland of the hero's warped psyche. The introduction scenes consist of painted photos presented in graphic-novel style, which is a stylistic choice that pays dividends, even though the writing is hilariously bad and the voice acting is, if possible, even worse.

Needless to say, all this is violent, disturbing, and not at all for the kids. Pay attention to the Mature rating; it's not there for decoration. --Bob Andrews

Originally released for the Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo 64, Star Wars: Episode I, Racer was a decent title with its share of flaws--most notably its control and graphics. The game's PlayStation2 sequel, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, addresses many of the original's shortcomings and is a vastly superior product. Rainbow Studios--known for its strong racers such as ATV Offroad Fury and Motocross Madness--developed this game, unlike the original. The developer's prowess at creating racing games is evident, as this title features much better controls and more compelling races. Furthermore, it receives a nice graphics upgrade that showcases the capabilities of the PS2. This game is superior in every respect to its predecessor.

Game modes include practice, single play, tournament, time trials, and versus. Tournament mode is the bulk of the game. Players can beat it in fewer than three hours and it isn't particularly difficult. Replay value is added by requiring you to beat the tournament mode several times so you can unlock all the game's secrets. Oddly enough, the game's sound--usually LucasArts's forte--is hampered by an unusual effect: at times you'll hear the full Star Wars treatment, as John Williams's score and cool sound effects totally capture the feel of the movies, but other times you'll hear only the sound of your engine. The environmental audio is an interesting choice that wasn't executed very well. Audio and brevity issues aside, this game is one of the strongest Star Wars titles released for a console. --Raymond M. Padilla
